INTERVIEW. Beth Ann Hoyos and Lorrinda Cerrutti are opening a new boutique in the North End on Friday. Selling vintage and contemporary wraps, handbags, jewelry and more the two are going all out with an opening night celebration with DJ Joel spinning in the space that Hoyos calls “feminine, airy and light.”
What exactly does Velvet Fly mean?
Cerrutti: We wish we had an interesting story about how we came up with the name of our store, but we don’t. We just liked it! We liked the idea that Fly has several meanings: Fly means cool, fly means the zipper on your pants and fly is also an insect.
What made you decide to open your store in the North End?
Hoyos: We looked for a long time for our location and loved the North End because it is reflective of our concept: Modern Vintage. It is a great mix of old world Italian culture and new modern living with all the younger people who have moved here. We love the neighborhood feel and you can’t beat the foot traffic and tourism.
What are some of the labels people can expect to find at the store?
Cerutti: Some of our other new labels besides Hazel, Voom and Kenzie are Made U look, Tulle, Soda Blue, Plastic Island, Mint & Brace, Level 99 and Comme Toi. Our vintage labels besides DVF are Whiting and Davis, Fischer, GiGi Young of New York and Anthony Richards. The jewelry designers are By Boe, Urban Dencity, & Lazuli and our vintage jewelry includes Whiting and Davis.
How much cash am I gonna have to drop if I come to get something for the lady friend?
Hoyos: We have a wide price range of clothing from $40 to $250. Our target customer is women between 25 and 55 with discerning taste looking to add personality to their wardrobe! The Velvet Fly is a place where you can find one of a kind vintage pieces that your friends will envy, without having to spend hours looking for them!
That’s a lot of exclamation points. So you’re having a party this Friday to celebrate the opening?
Please come have a drink with us!
