NFL. When the league office released the 2008 regular-season schedule yesterday, the Patriots were probably about as excited as they were when they walked off the field following their Super Bowl XLII loss to the Giants.
Their opponents had already been determined, and it’s a ragtag bunch that would have trouble succeeding against Michael Vick’s prison squad. The 13 teams the Patriots play next season had a combined 2007 winning percentage of .418, or about 6.7 wins.
And they only play four playoff teams from a year ago — the Chargers, Colts, Steelers and Seahawks, though Pittsburgh is the lone playoff squad visiting Gillette Stadium in 2008.
That aside, however, the Patriots’ schedule next season is brutal at times.
They open up at home against the Chiefs on Sept. 7 and will play two of their first three games at home against a trio of teams with a combined nine wins last year. And then the Patriots get their bye in Week 4.
They might not be tired after their September cakewalk, but as Pepper Johnson would say, “Get yo rest.”
After the bye, the Pats visit the 49ers, return home for a couple practice sessions and head back to the West Coast to take on the Chargers.
That’s not the only time the Patriots will double dip in the Pacific Ocean. They’ll take back-to-back trips out West again in Weeks 14 and 15, first visiting the Seahawks on prime time Sunday night then flying out to Oakland the following week. It’ll be time for head coach Bill
Belichick and his staff to get creative with their practices.
The Patriots are currently scheduled to play five nationally televised games (which could change due to the NFL’s flexible scheduling policy), but they only play on Monday Night Football once: at home against the Broncos on Oct. 20. That’s a break Belichick will gladly take, as teams aren’t fond of short weeks, especially those involving travel.
And get ready for the hype when they welcome the Jets to Gillette during a Thursday night game Nov. 13.
