BOSTON. The president of a local car dealership whose son threw out the first pitch before Clay Buchholz’s no-hitter last year was the winner in the online auction for the David Ortiz jersey, dug from cement at the new Yankee Stadium earlier this month.
Kevin Meehan, of Mendon, bid $175,100 just 18 seconds before the eBay auction ended, becoming the last of 282 bids placed. All of the proceeds will support the Jimmy Fund’s adult and pediatric cancer care and research.
“It’s a huge win-win for me,” Meehan told Metro. “I lost my dad to cancer. ... This was a chance to give something back, and I got this great piece of memorabilia.”
A Red Sox fan living in New York buried the jersey in wet cement during construction of the Yankees’ new home — set to open in 2009 — in an apparent attempt to curse the structure. The Yankees dug it up last week and donated it to the Jimmy Fund.
A board member of a local hospital, Meehan was interested in the jersey from the start. When his 10-year-old son, Jack, woke up early Thursday to remind his dad to bid again, he knew how much it meant to the boy.
“We are grateful for the generous bid, and extend our deep gratitude to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for coming together in this fight against cancer,” said Jimmy Fund Chairman Mike Andrews.
After Jack has a chance for show-and-tell at school, Meehan will display the jersey at his Ford dealership in Milford.
