Celtics make offer to Posey

NBA. While the Celtics remain aggressive in their attempts to re-sign James Posey, it appears they’re content with letting Tony Allen search for a new team.

The C’s have offered a contract to Posey, who became an unrestricted free agent two days ago when he declined his player option that would have paid him about $3.5 million next season.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge and Posey’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, each confirmed yesterday afternoon there is an offer on the table, but they wouldn’t discuss details.

Still, Bartelstein said his client is testing the market as Posey looks for what could be his last big contract. Free agents can’t officially sign until Tuesday.

“There’s obviously a lot of teams interested,” Bartelstein said. “He’s a guy a lot of people would like to have.

“The Celtics have been great with him. We’re certainly going to talk to them, but right now, he is a free agent. He’s got great feelings for Danny and Doc [Rivers], and if we can get something done, that would be great.”

Meanwhile, the Celtics didn’t make a qualifying offer to Allen, who became an unrestricted free agent yesterday.

“Tony may get something that entices him to change scenery,” Ainge said, “but he knows that he would be welcomed here in the right circumstance depending on what happens in free agency.”
