SXSW ’10: Get your dance on, great songs optional
The trends that emerged from the SXSW Music Conference in Austin last week are still bubbling to the top as I make sense of the hundreds of songs that filled the city for four days, but one thing I definitely noticed is that popular music may soon have a lot more emphasis on flexibility.

Allen: NFL 365
I was a little surprised this week when I saw that media sessions were being set up with Patriots players who are participating in the voluntary offseason workouts down in Gillette Stadium. I guess I shouldn't be, but its just another sign that the National Football League is a 365-days-a-year proposition these days.

At AKC, it’s score one for the mutts
Founded in 1884 as a registry for pure-bred dogs, the American Kennel Club didn’t traditionally offer many perks for your beloved lab-poodle-schnauzer mix. But as of April 1, the AKC Canine Partners Program will offer mutts not only membership benefits, but opportunities to compete at dog sporting events.

Matsuzaka shines in Sox’ return to Fenway

MLB. Manny Ramirez didn’t lift the bat off his shoulder amidst a forgettable pinch-hitting assignment in Sunday night’s loss to the Yankees. But he didn’t let destiny escape him a second straight night.

Ramirez put a beautiful inside-out swing on a 96 mph inside fastball and slapped a game-winning RBI single to right field in the Red Sox’ 1-0 win over the Twins last night at Fenway.

His eighth-inning heroics finally broke open what had been an impressive pitcher’s duel between Daisuke Matsuzaka and Twins righty Scott Baker.

The game-winning base knock was Ramirez’s team-leading ninth game-winning RBI of the season.

Matsuzaka had his typical early flight of fancy while loading the bases in the top of the first inning — including a pair of walks — but managed to escape the frame unscathed and went into shutdown mode over the next seven innings.

He walked three and struck out five but ran into a bit of difficulty in the top of the eighth. The Twins’ rally started with an Alexi Casilla bunt single after there was one down in the inning and continued with a Joe Mauer single to right field.

Matsuzaka was then lifted from the game, and left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima walked Justin Morneau to load the bases. But instead of shrinking as he’s done in recent spots with inherited runners on base, Okajima got nasty and retired Craig Monroe and Delmon Young to squelch the threat.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.
