The year’s best makeover: Gwyneth Paltrow scored major cool points in our book when she dropped the crunchy boho earth mother look and upped the sexy factor with sky-high heels, barely-there skirts and a hot new body. Even better, she did it all without looking trashy.
The less is more award: No matter how you feel about her modern version of Josephine Baker’s rainbow tribe, alleged publicity tactics, or over-hyped “rivalry” with Jennifer Aniston, you’ve got to hand it to Angelina Jolie for always looking good. Whether rocking jeans and motorcycle boots while running errands, or a simple black sheath on the red carpet, she nails minimalist chic.
The more is not more award: As evidenced by her stream of chart-topping singles and awards show appearances, Rihanna has had a great year. Her performance wardrobe, though, could use some work. From the lung-crushing leather corset to the corseted (sensing a theme here?), feathery dress thingy, she usually looks like she slathered herself in fabric glue, walked into a trimming shop, and just rolled around.
Our favorite people prize: Marc Jacobs and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, two of the most revered, influential and talented figures in fashion, could be hell-raising divas. Instead, they’re pretty approachable and funny people who don’t seem to take themselves too seriously. We love that. (And we love Marc Jacobs’ man-skirts, no matter what you say.)
The (don’t) strike a pose nod: Victoria Beckham’s foot forward, hands on hip, abs contracted, head tilted, eyes to the side, photo-op formula feels forced, dated and repetitive. It reminds us of those old school portraits where the photographer would carefully arrange the side of your forefinger against your chin and tilt your head just so.
The love it/hate it staff award: Is she fresh and original or trying too hard? Our staff was conflicted when we asked editors across Metro’s 82 editions to name the best and worst dressed celeb of the year. Agyness Deyn landed in the third spot of the best-dressed list, while managing to top the worst-dressed list.
