Cosmetic companies hone in on our nostalgia

Considering most makeup junkies begin their love affair at an early age with a bottle of Tinkerbell nail polish and mom’s lipstick, it’s not surprising many brands are going old school for the spring. From Skipper to Smurfette, cosmetic companies are appealing to our inner little girl in oversize high heels.

Hello Kitty Colour Collection
Hello Kitty has long been making everything and anything cuter with her spunky little face (admit it — you wanted the waffle iron), and it was only a matter of time before this diva got her own makeup line. MAC teamed up with Sanrio for the very “gimme!” Hello Kitty Colour Collection, which includes lipsticks, eye shadows, liners, powders, and mascaras — plus tools and accessories. Trying to be the ultimate cat’s meow? There’s also a Hello Kitty Kouture collection that blings out with Swarovski crystal charms and compacts (available Feb. 12 at MAC stores and at www.maccosmetics.com).

The Smurfette Collection
Smurfette: adorable little addition to Smurf Village, or kind of a smut? Too Faced embraces both sides in their cheeky new line, The Smurfette Collection. “Mood Swing,” an “emotionally activated lip gloss,” turns from blue to Smurf-berry pink and features a smooching Smurfette on the tube. Two shades of liquid eyeliner are available — “Feelin’ Smurfy” and “Smurf You” — and a very come-hither Smurfette graces the front of the eye shadow compact
(available this Spring at www.toofaced.com).

Barbie Loves Stila
“Both Stila and Barbie are whimsical, girly brands which are about fun, fashion, and innovation,” says Stila president and CEO Deanna Kangas of their line featuring the Mattel icon. Stila’s limited-edition “Decades of Beauty Cans” from the Barbie Loves Stila collection are only a taste of the complete fall line celebrating the doll’s 50th birthday, but they’re a sweet taste. Each of the four available tins features a different era Barbie — including the very retro “Pontytail Doll” from 1959 and “Foxy Doll,” representing 1980 with a cute afro — along with a lip color, two eye shadows, a cheek color, and a mascara or eyeliner ($40, www.sephora.com).

MMMpod
The March MMMpod features conversation and music from Surfer Blood and The Allman Brothers Band (There's a double-bill you're not too likely to see. However, Gregg Allman does mention Hannah Montana!). We also speak with Vampire Weekend and the Dropkick Murphys.
