The founders of file-sharing site The Pirate Bay scored an early point in the copyright infringement
trial in Stockholm, Sweden.
Yesterday, on the second day of the trial, prosecutor Håkan Roswall announced the charges of assisting copyright infringement had been dropped.
Only the lesser charges of assisting making copyrighted material available remain.
Legal experts told Metro the decision might cast doubt over the prosecuting side’s credibility.
“It is clear the prosecutor had no clue about the technology behind the charges,” said legal expert Stefan Wahlberg. “When the defense counsel explained how the torrent technology works, he realized there were no grounds for the charge.”
Criminologist Jerzy Sarnecki was surprised the prosecutor dropped the more serious charges.
“This will not boost his credibility. The lay assessors might ask themselves whether the lesser charge is founded.”
