Manhattan. The Rev. Al Sharpton called on the city yesterday to stop advertising in the New York Post and said he will collect 1 million signatures to petition the Federal Communications Commission to pull Rupert Murdoch’s waiver to own two TV stations and two newspapers. Fallout from the Post’s cartoon of a chimpanzee shot by police officers, that some have called a racist reference to President Obama, also fueled a protest at Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College.
Students burned copies of the Post and called for a boycott of the newspaper and the Murdoch-owned MySpace. The NAACP has called for a Post boycott and resignations at the paper.
The Post apologized to anyone offended by the cartoon in an online editorial.
