Philadelphia’s Gay Men’s Chorus breaks out the ’80s songbook

Flipped up collars, lace gloves, big hair: The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) is getting a costume change for “That ’80s Show,” a song-and-dance show debuting at the Prince Music Theater this weekend.

More than 100 singers and dancers will take to the stage, a first for the chorus, as well as 20 soloists, including PGMC all-stars John Laury, Doug Cooper and Glen Abrams. Highlights of “That ’80s Show” include music from the usual suspects — Madonna, Michael Jackson, Wham!, Devo, and some selections from “Thriller.”

Additionally, Devon Neubauer, a longtime cabaret producer from New Hope, created video montages of ’80s films, television shows and commercials, which will be accompanied by theme song medleys from The Love Boat and Golden Girls.

PGMC’s small ensemble Brotherly Love is also interpreting old favorites, says longtime PGMC member Mark McClurg, including hits by The Culture Club, Tears for Fears and Toni Basil, which includes an all-male cheerleading routine. Says McClurg, “The chorus is leaving the tuxedos in the closet this time and pulling out the pastel Polo shirts.”
