We won’t diss ‘Distance’
Most coastal city-dwellers who are familiar with the grittier, busier side of life, relationships and indie-rock bands will love “Going the Distance”; the rest of America, not so much.

Vazquez due back in rotation
A mechanical alteration has Javier Vazquez back in the Yankee rotation.

Illegal population has fallen
The number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. shrank 8 percent to 11.1 million in 2009 from a peak of 12 million in 2007.

Veggie burger revolution
Even though he occasionally eats meat, Lukas Volger champions veggie burgers. “I love them, but veggie burgers have a terrible reputation,” he says. To change the perception of this freezer staple as boring, over-processed and cardboard-y, Volger created 32 flavorful recipes using fresh, wholesome ingredients in his new book, “Veggie Burgers Every Which Way.”

‘Other’ Andy aims for breakthrough
Andy Murray's latest bid to end Britain’s long wait for a Grand Slam champion gets under way today when he begins his U.S. Open campaign against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko.

Playing Nintendo in the mine
The 33 miners trapped underneath a Chilean mountain are safe. The most challenging task now is making sure the miners don’t lose their sanity as they await rescue.

Quakers not about to second that emotion
For the first time since 2003, the defending champion Penn Quakers find themselves the hunted, rather than the hunters, in the Ivy League this season. They’re also a win away from the prestigious 800 mark in school history, with longtime coach Al Bagnoli three wins from passing George Woodruff as the school’s all-time winningest coach.

‘I am good enough, I am smart enough ... ’
So you squandered an estate note on a bachelor’s degree, then trudged through more entry-level hardships and thankless internships than should be legally permissable, only to backslide into a self-esteem shattering, résumé-derailing grind, several tax brackets below your dignity.

University City back in business
From Baltimore to Lancaster avenues and along Market Street in between, University City is abuzz from the arrivals of college students and professors back after summer vacation.

‘Check out the moobs on that guy’
While breast-enhancing surgery has become almost a norm for American women, men are also heading to the plastic surgeon’s office more often — to have their man-boobs (moobs) removed.

Verdasco rings the Belle

Andy Roddick’s got a rather impressive girlfriend résumé — Mandy Moore, he was linked to Paris Hilton briefly, a reality star everyone’s already forgotten about, and a model you’ve probably never heard of. Roddick’s getting married sometime in the coming months to SI model Brooklyn Decker.

Pete Sampras has a celebrity wife, Andre Agassi once did, and soon, Roddick will join the club.

Does that make eighth-ranked Fernando Verdasco the new ladies man on the circuit? Only 25, Verdasco’s already dated tennis players Ana Ivanovic and Gisela Dulko, actress Dafne Fernandez and model Priscilia de Gustin, and his latest paramour is American actress Camilla Belle.

The two were inseparable last week in California. While he was on the court at Indian Wells at the BNP Paribas Open, she was eyeing him from the stands. They were laughing and having a grand ol’ time in some of the photos – surely he’s ribbing her for how bad “10,000 BC” was last year.

Here’s how you know you’re getting old: One of the best young pitchers in baseball, Tim Lincecum, is 24. Tiny Tim won the Cy Young award in the NL last year and will be featured in a commercial for the video game MLB 2K9. In said commercial, the great ’80s tune, “Dance Hall Days” (Wang Chung, but you knew that) is playing on the radio.

Lincecum later admitted to not knowing the tune, and not listening to ’80s music. This must mean that he’s never seen “Bachelor Party,” since that catchy song is playing during one of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

Well, that settles it. No matter how good this kid is, there’s no way we can have him on our fantasy baseball team if he doesn’t know “Dance Hall Days.”

Jason Raj McIntyre covers athletes away from the field of play and runs the popular Web site The Big Lead. He’s become increasingly impressed with the arm candy of tennis players, although he’ll still take WAGs any day of the week.

The Rundown

Another Brady blurb

Tom Bradys from California. His wife, Gisele, is from Brazil. Somehow, they settled on Costa Rica two weeks from now for his wedding. (A wedding on the night of the Final Four? Guess he’s not a basketball guy.)

Five names we figure were on the guest list:

1. Drew Bledsoe, former Patriots QB. Injured in Week 2 of the 2001 season, Brady took over and Bledsoe was shipped to parts unknown (read: Buffalo).

2. Mo Lewis, former Jets’ linebacker. The guy who knocked Bledsoe out.

3. Bernard Pollard, Kansas City Chiefs. Sure, he ended Brady’s season last year, but Gisele invited him because she’s thrilled his injury meant more time at home.

4. Marko Jaric, Memphis Grizzlies. The scrub is married to Adriana Lima, another supermodel, and they all run in the same circles. Right?

5. Will Smith. Had to pass because he starred in “I, Robot” with Brady’s ex-girlfriend, Bridget Moynahan.
