‘In A Dream’
Director: Jeremiah Zagar
Cast: Isaiah, Julia, Ezekiel and Jeremiah Zagar
Rating: N/A
You could probably guess that the guy behind South Street’s Magic Gardens has quite a story. Held together by intricate mosaics, the sculptures incorporate everything from bicycles to baby dolls. Phrases, faces, animals and skylines float through artist Isaiah Zagar’s extensive world, which he’s been piecing together for more than 40 years.
“In a Dream,” a documentary shot by his son Jeremiah, chronicles his artistic process, as well as his family and personal history — all of which are delicately interwoven. For Isaiah, his art is more of a coping mechanism (although a very beautiful one) as opposed to a career or even a passion.
The mosaics — which cover more than 50,000 square feet throughout the city — have helped relieve him from mental illness, and are at times all-engrossing, demanding up to 14 hours a day of his time.
Inevitably, the film focuses on the eccentric Zagar family more than the work, but it’s a welcome and pleasingly jarring story. This is a terribly real family with affairs, addictions, and messy breakdowns, but who ultimately can share a meal together in their compulsively tiled kitchen and laugh about it.
It’s hard to tell if “In a Dream” is completely genius, or if we’ve just become accustomed to the “reality” of the “Real Housewives,” but it’s as heartbreaking as it is gorgeous to watch unfold.
