BOSTON. There are no residences along this stretch on the northern end of Roxbury, but that’s not to say there aren’t any homes.
Hundreds flock here for a variety of reasons. The Roxbury Mosque, a subject of controversy leading up to its completion, now stands as a beacon for local Muslims and is New England’s largest mosque. The quaint, classic St. John’s-St. James Episcopalian Church rests on a rise on the other end of the block.
Across the way is the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, which hosts sporting events with a nod toward the Northeastern University and Celtics basketball great. Next door is the Madison Park High School, home of the reigning boys basketball city champs, and across the way neighborhood kids wrangle for court time behind the James P. Timilty Middle School.
It’s safe to say both hoops and holiness are well represented.
And while there are no homes here on this stretch between Dudley Square and Roxbury Crossing, there are plenty of ways to get back before dinner.
Technically, a direct connection can be made between the heart of Dorchester and the city’s medical area miles away with Malcolm X Boulevard a major part of that trip. For travel in the other directions one can use the MBTA’s Roxbury Crossing station and the Southwest Corridor Park, at the west end of the block.
