His name is ‘Mudd’

It doesn’t matter what he’s talking about. Just the timbre of that voice inspires fear when in the presence of John Malkovich.

Even if he’s polite, one can’t ignore the feeling that something intense is bubbling underneath. Such is the case when the celebrated actor speaks about his project “Which Way Home,” a documentary for which he serves as the executive producer.

Many actors like to wear several hats, but Malkovich and his production company, Mr. Mudd, have been particularly successful with this one, especially given that the films he has produced — such as “Ghost World” and “Juno” — have garnered so much critical praise and recognition even without his name being visibly attached. For “Which Way Home”, he’s backing filmmaker Rebecca Cammisa’s shocking documentary about Central American children running away from home with the hopes of making it to the United States to find work.

“It was terrifically touching and really effective,” says Malkovich of the film. “Obviously, this is quite a hot-button topic, to use some Clinton-speak. To me, it was really just about these kids and about the human journey they go on.”

The film follows several children on their trip north as they hop freight trains and forage for food. Given the dangerous conditions of travel for these children, the film makes a clear argument for a change in immigration policy. Yet Malkovich is not taking this one to Washington.

“I do not have an overabundance of faith,” he says flatly. “I’ve been around too long for that. That people realize that you’re talking about human beings, that’s all. To me, that’s more important than any [policy] because it seems that could be quite easy to forget.”
