“... the reformation of the Gary Burton Quartet now rates as a legitimate super-group.”
In the early 1970s, vibraphonist Gary Burton, long intent on fostering young jazz talent, enlisted a promising 19-year-old guitarist for his quartet.
Pat Metheny has spent much of the ensuing three-and-a-half decades atop the jazz hierarchy, so the reformation of the Gary Burton Quartet now rates as a legitimate supergroup.
Along with Metheny and Burton, the group also includes original bassist Steve Swallow, who co-founded Burton’s quartet in 1967, and a relative newbie, drummer Antonio Sanchez, who has been working with Metheny for the last 10 years. The group reformed in the summer of 2005 at the annual Montreal Jazz Festival, but the foursome’s rapport and energy quickly overtook the nostalgia value and the reunion was extended, with four years of gigging now under their belts. Metheny always attracts a legion of guitar fanatics for his stops at the Keswick, and given the evidence of their recently-released “Quartet Live!” CD, the band will not disappoint.
