SOMERVILLE. Gov. Deval Patrick announced a commitment of $65 million in state and federal money yesterday to move forward the Assembly Square project in Somerville, a development expected to stimulate the city’s economy.

The plan, known as Assembly on the Mystic, includes millions of square feet of office, retail and residential space, as well as a hotel and an IKEA store.

“This project will put people to work now and in the future, and deliver a host of economic, housing and community benefits to Somerville and the region,” Patrick said in a statement. “This is what recovery spending is all about.”

The funds, which will pay for public infrastructure improvements, will come from federal stimulus money and a new state program aimed at generating private investment and economic growth.
“Today, we are one step closer to making the Assembly on the Mystic a reality,” U.S. Sen. John Kerry said in a statement.

The development, which also includes waterfront parks, bike paths and a new MBTA Orange Line stop, is expected to create thousands of jobs. The first phase is already underway.
