MUSIC. Looking for a positive perspective in pop?
The Noisettes, touring the states on the eve of the fall release of their “Wild Young Hearts” from Mercury Records, aren’t down with lyrical pessimism.
“Music can be optimistic,” says Noisettes charismatic frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa. “We’re giving you a choice. To us it’s uncool to mess your head up but the last 10 years have been dominated by that cool guy image — it’s almost uncool to be happy.”
The Noisettes offer pop tunes chock full of alluring melodies and upbeat hooks. The band just might do for the ’60s Brill Building sound what Amy Winehouse did for ’60s R&B.
“We want to cheer people up,” Shoniwa says. “With the way the world is, we want to give people something to sing along with.”
And watch, too. The Noisettes — which feature Shoniwa on vocals and bass, Dan Smith on guitar and Jamie Morrison on drums — certainly isn’t your standard four-guys-on-a-stage indie group.
“I like to feel like I’m in the moment when I’m performing a show,” Shoniwa says.
