Last year’s rookie running back class was really sexy. Think Megan Fox. This year’s class? Think Oprah.
If you thought you were going to steal a Matt Forte, Chris Johnson or Steve Slaton this year, you’ve gotten a rude awakening through two weeks. The mid-round rookie backs have done virtually nothing.
And don’t say it’s too early. Last year at this time, Forte, Johnson and Slaton had already all broken out.
But all is not lost. Here’s a quick look at the prospects for the five rookie backs selected first in fantasy drafts:
1. Knowshon Moreno — He’s been outplayed by Correll Buckhalter, but Moreno is starting to tighten his grip on the job. He’s worth a flex play right now.
2. Chris Wells — Right now, Tim Hightower’s skills are a better fit for the Cards’ offense. Until Beanie solves his fumbling and pass protection issues, he’s not worth a start.
3. Donald Brown — He’s in an even timeshare with Joseph Addai, but the rookie is playing in the fourth quarter. That’s a sign for down the road.
4. LeSean McCoy — He’s not in a committee with Brian Westbrook. McCoy is a straight backup.
5. James Davis — The preseason darling was in a minor car accident and then hurt his shoulder in Week 1. He’s a long way off from taking over for Jamal Lewis.
