BE PROACTIVE: GET YOUR INTERNSHIP LINED UP EARLY

If you’re a college student, then now’s the time — not after graduation — to start your internship or entry-level job search. The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that hiring is down 7 percent for the class of 2010. To make the situation worse, you’ll also be competing with people twice or three times your age for the same positions.

When you begin your search, don’t play by the old and outdated rules and venture to the typical job boards like Monster.com. A lot of networks and blogs are out there to support you and to connect you with both hiring managers and peers.

Helpful resources:
BrazenCareerist.com: A career management tool and online community for next-generation professionals that showcases more than just résumés, but ideas, which in today’s world are more valuable.

UrbanInterns.com: An online marketplace for grads seeking part-time work and internships, both paid and unpaid.

Experience.com:
Discover who you are, where you fit in, and become familiar with alumni, career experts and industry insiders.

iMantri.com: Students need mentors, and this community will help you find the right ones.

Don’t just aimlessly apply or beg for jobs and internships when it’s too late. By staying connected, building relationships and seeking help right now, you will be positioned for success (and a job) upon graduation.
