Back in 2004, South Philly writer Carla Spataro was leafing through a copy of New York City-based journal Literal Latte and thought, “Why isn’t there something like this in Philadelphia?” She tried to think of someone she knew in publishing, and quickly gave Christine Weiser a call. It was on.
Though the co-publishers still don’t take any salary from the project, Philadelphia Stories now publishes about 5,000 copies per 30-page issue four times a year, and “The Best of Philadelphia Stories, Volume II” was released last week through their new publishing arm, PS Books.
“We made a very conscious choice — because we felt Philadelphia was often treated like the ugly little cultural sister of New York and other cities — to feature Philadelphia and Philadelphians,” says Weiser.
