Within football circles, Junior Seau’s life will forever be defined as that of a Hall of Fame linebacker.
But he’s a lot more than just a football player.
Every offseason, the newest old Patriot tries to learn — and master — something. He has recently taught himself how to surf and play the guitar, and this past offseason, he filmed a reality show in which he has trained as a bullfighter, gotten into the ring with the UFC’s Forrest Griffin and driven with racer Danica Patrick.
That streak is why, his latest comeback aside, the 40-year-old Seau says he won’t have any problems quitting for good — someday. But as long as the Patriots need him, he’ll be around.
“Tell Bill [Belichick] ‘You can close [my career] by not calling me,’” Seau said. “Let me surf.”
Eventually, when the Belichick stops calling, Seau will leave the game at peace and continue living life to its fullest.
“There’s such a great lifestyle that you work so long to enjoy,” said Seau, a 20-year veteran. “I’m not going to cry about cutting up oranges and apples and packing a cooler and going to a football game, my son’s football game or my daughter’s volleyball games, and heading home and surfing for three hours, having a tuna sandwich and playing the ukulele. There’s nothing bad about that.”
