Five years after her character on “The Sopranos” was killed off, Drea de Matteo finds herself returning to television to tangle with a group possibly more dangerous than the mafia: the women of “Desperate Housewives.”
De Matteo arrives on Wisteria Lane this season as Angie Bolen and finds herself going toe-to-toe with Marcia Cross’ domestic diva. “No one can have more attitude than Bree Van De Kamp,” she says.
It’s her first TV gig since the ill-fated “Friends” spin-off, “Joey,” which she admits wasn’t the right move. “I should have never been there. It was just not the right time for me to be doing that,” she says. “I should’ve been taking a break after ‘Sopranos.’ A big one.”
De Matteo admits she’s been a fan of “Housewives” for a long time, which made joining the cast a little awkward.
“I had to stop watching it before I came on because I was in a hyper reality when I was acting with the girls. I was like, ‘Oh my God, Bree’s talking to me!’” she says. “I was a nervous wreck.”
Between “Joey” and “Housewives,” de Matteo disappeared from the acting world for several years to focus on her relationship with musician Shooter Jennings. Having her infant daughter, Alabama, on the road has opened de Matteo’s eyes to the softer side of roadies and rockers.
“All these guys, they’re drinking all night, and then they go into a truck stop and buy food or whatever. And then every morning we’ll wake up and there’ll be a stuffed animal from every single crew member on the bus,” she says. “And this is every night. They just go and buy all these toys. So the bus is filled with stuffed toys.”
