The title of Rodrigo y Gabriela’s latest album, “11:11,” isn’t named after a superstition where you get 11 wishes when the clock turns this number, and it’s not indicative of a crazy musical time signature.
Simply, there are 11 songs paired with 11 inspirational artists, which both furthers the couple’s genre-straddling instrumental music while also adding a warm tribute.
Note: This isn’t a traditional tribute album. Nor does it contain any nifty covers, as did their previous self-titled record, which wooed audiences with acoustic flamenco-esque renditions of Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” (brave) and Metallica’s “Orion” (inspired).
“11:11” is all Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero: their music, their musical passions. As much as they’re artists, they’re music fans, too.
“It was interesting to come up with these artists; it took us a few weeks to choose 11 that were equally influential to both of us,” says Sanchez. “We both had to agree on them. We couldn’t have one that is more influential to me than it is to Gab.”
Any arguments?
“We had a few,” he says. “I knew that if I said Megadeth, Gab was going to say, ‘Oh, maybe not.’ She likes them, but not as much as I do. And she knew that if she said Bjork, well, I like Bjork, but not as much as she does.”
Like any couple, it was all about the compromise. “We kind of knew where to go and how much we could push.”
