It’s hard to keep up with trends, even when it comes to mat exercises. One moment we thought Pilates was the coolest way to bend our bodies, and the next we hear about the jazzier “dynamic Pilates.” “Traditional Pilates is a more rehabilitative approach, slow, controlled and therapeutic, the perfect combination for people suffering from injuries,” says David Higgins, master trainer at London’s Ten Pilates center. “Although still focusing on activating core muscles, dynamic Pilates takes things one step further.”
Dynamic Pilates aims for a technical approach and uses a machine dubbed the “Reformer” to intensify the workout. “It focuses on the principle of core activation, awareness and strengthening of muscles,” says Higgins. “You will not only be building up core strength, but your entire body.”
