Nearly 65 percent of the world’s airlines are expected to increase their extra fees by up to 20 percent next year, according to a study released this month by revenue specialist firm Collinson Latitude.
The rise of extra fees for things that have been historically complimentary, such as stowed luggage, check-in, food and more, seems to have made its way around the world, perhaps permanently.
Ryanair, Europe’s busiest airline and a low-budget carrier, raised its baggage fee by 50 percent for one checked bag last month. Extra fees for baggage have quickly gone from being just for domestic routes into the international sector as well, and at steep prices. British Airways now charges around $68 for a second bag (and $140 for a third), depending on your destination.
But a clear difference exists between budget king Ryanair, which offers low ticket prices, and legacy carrier British Airways, which is adding fees on top of their much higher ticket charges.
