Back in the trenches
Steven Spielberg makes strikingly vivid, breathtakingly poetic movies about some of the most terrifying conflicts in the history of man. The filmmaking aesthetic he pioneered with “Saving Private Ryan” — and continues to perfect in HBO’s new WWII miniseries, “The Pacific” — was born out of a desire to translate as honestly as possible his conversations with veterans on their combat experience.

After bitter fight, shovels hit dirt
Inside a tent overlooking the Atlantic Rail Yards, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson celebrated the groundbreaking on Thursday with developer Bruce Ratner and rapper Jay-Z, a minor investor in the Nets, for the $1 billion Barclays Center. Set to open in 2012 — three years behind schedule — it was hindered by legal battles and the economic crisis.

Pacquiao fight not the one we wanted to see
Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring Saturday, but not to face the opponent fans wanted for him: Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Cops on the hunt for man in vicious attack on woman
Waitresses at Social bar and grill on Eighth Avenue tried to put a cheerful face on happy hour Thursday, but patrons and passers-by recoiled at news that a woman was attacked and brutally beaten inside one of the bar’s bathrooms early that morning.

Quarterbacks getting chopped

Looking ahead

As we hit the peak of trading season, we need to keep in mind fantasy playoff schedules. Here are three guys/teams to buy on:

  1. Anquan Boldin, Cardinals — “Q” will be healthy by the time the Cards play the Lions and Rams in Weeks 15 and 16.
  2. Dwayne Bowe, Chiefs — Expect a pass-heavy attack from the Chiefs going forward. Browns and Bengals in 15 and 16.
  3. Jerome Harrison, Browns — Jamal Lewis should be donezo by the time the Browns play KC and OAK.

NFL coaches are just as confused as the rest of us this season. At least a quarter of the league’s signal callers are under heavy fire heading into Week 8.

Some quarterbacks have already been benched, while others are teetering on the edge. Here’s a look at the situations from a fantasy perspective:

  • 49ers — Alex Smith has officially taken over from Shaun Hill and that’s a good thing for everyone. He has good chemistry with Vernon Davis and will keep the defense honest enough for Frank Gore.
  • Panthers — It was a close call, but Jake Delhomme is still the starter over Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley. That’s a bad thing for Steve Smith and the running game. Delhomme is cooked.
  • Bucs — The Josh Freeman era has officially begun, and why not? The Bucs are 0-7. However, Antonio Bryant and Kellen Winslow’s value won’t get a bump with the 6-foot-6 rookie under center.
  • Titans — The owner wants Vince Young and the coach’s guy is Kerry Collins. Young is more exciting, but he would struggle even more to get the ball to Nate Washington and Justin Gage.
  • Bills — Trent Edwards has been medically cleared to play, but he’s still on the bench. That’s stirring some noise that Ryan Fitzpatrick could end up taking the job. Lee Evans would like that as he’s Fitzpatrick’s favorite target.
Pickups of the week
  •  Beanie Wells

    Running back, Cardinals
He was drafted in all leagues, but was probably dropped. The changing of the guard with Tim
Hightower is happening as we speak. Add Beanie.

  • Jamaal Charles

    Running back, Chiefs
Larry Johnson may have played his last down in the NFL. Charles is a good pass-catcher and doesn’t have much competition for the feature back role.

  • Shonn Greene

    Running back, Jets
Leon Washington took the phrase “break a leg” way too literally. Greene won’t play on third downs, but he’s a bruiser that can step in for 10-13 carries now.

Start/Sit
  • START: Lance Moore will bounce back from a one-catch effort against the Falcons’ ravaged secondary. ... David Clowney is a risky home run threat.
  • SIT: Michael Crabtree was impressive in his debut, playing 89 percent of the snaps. But the Colts’ secondary is a different beast.
