Back in the trenches
Steven Spielberg makes strikingly vivid, breathtakingly poetic movies about some of the most terrifying conflicts in the history of man. The filmmaking aesthetic he pioneered with “Saving Private Ryan” — and continues to perfect in HBO’s new WWII miniseries, “The Pacific” — was born out of a desire to translate as honestly as possible his conversations with veterans on their combat experience.

After bitter fight, shovels hit dirt
Inside a tent overlooking the Atlantic Rail Yards, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson celebrated the groundbreaking on Thursday with developer Bruce Ratner and rapper Jay-Z, a minor investor in the Nets, for the $1 billion Barclays Center. Set to open in 2012 — three years behind schedule — it was hindered by legal battles and the economic crisis.

2 Storylines to Watch

1 Will Westbrook be his usual Giant-killer self?

It’s hard to imagine that Brian Westbrook would play just six days removed from a concussion, but Andy Reid isn’t ruling him out. Westbrook hasn’t practiced all week, but we’ve seen this many times before from the Willis Reed wannabe. If he plays, look out. Westbrook has been a Giants killer throughout his career, racking up 14 TDs in 12 career games against New York. It all started with that 84-yard punt return for a score in 2003.

2 Don’t bet on it: Eagles corners up to task.

Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown are considered two of the top cover corners in the NFL. The main difference: Brown relishes making the big hit, while Samuel avoids it like the plague. But, at times, both will gamble for the interception. It usually works, but Giants receiver Steve Smith thinks he may be able to exploit an advantage. “I think sometimes they get caught with their eyes in the backfield, and you can run right by them sometimes,” said Smith.

Vick’s Wildcat coming along

When the Eagles signed Michael Vick, it appeared the team planned to unleash a no-holds-barred Wildcat attack. So far, it hasn’t played out that way.

In his first game back from suspension, against Kansas City, Vick participated in 11 Wildcat plays, netting just seven total yards. In recent weeks, his packages have seemed to decrease. The Eagles ran six Wildcat plays against the Redskins, but Vick was on the field for just four of them. Still, the quarterback isn’t upset.

“Five months ago, I wasn't even playing football,” Vick said. “Now I have a chance to go out and make a play every now and then, and I want them all to be positive.”
