Back in the trenches
Steven Spielberg makes strikingly vivid, breathtakingly poetic movies about some of the most terrifying conflicts in the history of man. The filmmaking aesthetic he pioneered with “Saving Private Ryan” — and continues to perfect in HBO’s new WWII miniseries, “The Pacific” — was born out of a desire to translate as honestly as possible his conversations with veterans on their combat experience.

After bitter fight, shovels hit dirt
Inside a tent overlooking the Atlantic Rail Yards, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson celebrated the groundbreaking on Thursday with developer Bruce Ratner and rapper Jay-Z, a minor investor in the Nets, for the $1 billion Barclays Center. He’s never tapped out or been knocked out. He’s widely considered the best heavyweight MMA fighter in the world. He’s had a documentary made about him called “Baddest Man on the Planet” — and it might not be a misnomer.

Is it finally time for Fedor Emelianenko to bust onto the mainstream sports radar in the U.S.?

The Russian fighter, who has only ever lost on a flukey TKO, meets Brett Rogers Saturday in his first fight with the Strikeforce promotion. It’s a rare high-profile bout not on pay-per-view; CBS will air it at 9 p.m. A sellout is expected at Chicago’s Sears Centre Arena.
