The Patriots are playing the Dolphins on Sunday, and that means one thing: They’ll have to be ready for anything.
Miami sports one of the most unorthodox offensive attacks in the NFL. The Wildcat formation is the centerpiece, but the Dolphins have proven willing to do just about anything at any time with the ball.
“They have new stuff every week,” New England coach Bill Belichick said. “They have a lot of different gadget plays, different formations ... that run the same plays. And they have a variety of gadget plays — two, three, four of them every week.
“Everybody gets it, so I’m sure we’ll get it.”
At least it’s not unexpected. The Wildcat — in which a running back lines up under center — made its grand debut against the Patriots in Week 3 last year. The Dolphins won that game 38-13, and the offense’s mystique grew from there.
As a whole, though, Miami has been mediocre this year. They lost their first three, and need a win Sunday to stay in the chase for the AFC East.
