An Amtrak ride to Philly is faster than the M4 bus from Penn Station to the northern tip of Manhattan.
“I’d believe it,” said Valerie Ponti, 60, who rides the M4 twice a day. Her commute from Madison Avenue and 98th Street to Penn Station takes an hour. “It’s like they drive slowly on purpose.”
“It’s really frustrating,” said John McConey, 64. He gets the bus at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue and heads to his doctor at 76th and Madison. It sometimes takes 90 minutes to travel the 34 blocks.
The Straphangers Campaign’s annual awards for the MTA’s worst buses:
The “Pokey” Award goes to the 42nd Street cross-town M42. It runs at 3.7 mph.
The “Schleppie” goes to Brooklyn’s B44, that runs between the Williamsburg Bridge and Sheepshead Bay. It’s the most unreliable.
The “Trekkie” goes to the M4, for the nearly two-hour trek riders must endure.
