‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ really is, um, fantastic

Plot Synopsis

Mr. and Mrs. Fox move into a tree house, where Mr. Fox gives into his wild animal instincts and reverts back to the chicken thief he was in his previous single life. Once he takes on his formidable neighbors, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, however, he jeopardizes not only his family, but the surrounding animal community as well.

‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’
Director: Wes Anderson
Cast: George Clooney, Meryl Streep
Rating: PG
Grade: ➊➋➌➍➎

“The Fantastic Mr. Fox” is the movie Wes Anderson was meant to make. Heartfelt yet witty, hyperstylized yet authentic, the stop-animation retelling of the Roald Dahl book does more than honor its source. It creates a revival of family-oriented storytelling.

Anderson’s quirky aesthetic in films such as “The Royal Tenenbaums” is given a chance to be fleshed out in the fanciful world of anthropomorphic woodland creatures in “Mr. Fox.” Anderson molds the story into the themes he is fond of — an overconfident middle-aged male leads his somewhat dysfunctional family to breakdown, only to also be the aid in getting them out.
