Goodbye and good riddance

Rex Ryan added to his already massive reputation as a players’ coach. Ryan gave the 4-4 Jets nearly the entire bye week off last week.

Just imagine the vacation time he’d grant a winning team.

The Jets next vacation, though, may come sooner than they’d like. Losers of four of their last five, including a 30-25 loss to Miami in Week 8, the Jets have been forced to talk about playing a full 60 minutes rather than actually going out and doing it. They get their chance Sunday against 4-4 Jacksonville.

“I know I am always dragged into it, ‘loud mouth, fat coach,’ whatever,” said Ryan. “That is fine. I don’t care. This is going to be a great opportunity for us to play against a good football team, a football team that is in a very similar situation that we’re in.”

True statement, but the Jaguars’ offense can score, the Jets’ offense is still riddled with inconsistency.

Luckily for the Jets, their defense is not. Ryan’s ‘D’ ranks second in the NFL, conceding just 273.4 yards per game. And cornerback Darrelle Revis plans on taking scoring into his own hands.

“We have to strip the ball and guys have to be able to pick it up and take it the distance,” said Revis. “We have to get interceptions, set up walls and take it the distance. We have to focus on scoring touchdowns on defense.”

The defense is seemingly doing everything but scoring points. They recorded six sacks against Miami. David Garrard is next on the hit list.

“It may be easier to knock the ball out of this kid’s hand than it is to tackle him,” Ryan said. “Let’s not just be happy just getting the takeaway. That’s great, but we need to be aggressive. We have to score when we get them.”
