SXSW ’10: Get your dance on, great songs optional
The trends that emerged from the SXSW Music Conference in Austin last week are still bubbling to the top as I make sense of the hundreds of songs that filled the city for four days, but one thing I definitely noticed is that popular music may soon have a lot more emphasis on flexibility.

Subway work unearths past
Pointy shoes, oyster shells, clay pipes and other detritus of the Dutch who founded New Amsterdam, the British who followed and the early New Yorkers were among the 65,000 artifacts uncovered during construction of the $400 million South Ferry subway terminal.

At AKC, it’s score one for the mutts
Founded in 1884 as a registry for pure-bred dogs, the American Kennel Club didn’t traditionally offer many perks for your beloved lab-poodle-schnauzer mix. Too early to end Westbrook’s year

More nicks

Jason Peters’ ankle is just sprained and he’s expected to play this week. Sheldon Brown is undergoing tests on his hamstring and his status is uncertain.

It’s too early to tell if Brian Westbrook will play again this season, Eagles coach Andy Reid said yesterday.

During the third quarter of Philadelphia’s 31-23 defeat at San Diego on Sunday, the two-time Pro Bowl running back suffered a second concussion in three weeks. It was Westbrook’s first game back, having been knocked cold Oct. 26 at Washington.

In his weekly day-after press conference, Reid defended the process that put Westbrook back in harm’s way.

“We took every precautionary measure we could before, and it happened again,” the coach said, “Football, right now, for Brian Westbrook, is not the most important thing.”

Westbrook suffered the concussion on a screen play in the third quarter. Unlike in Washington, Westbrook never lost consciousness.

If Westbrook’s season is over, the Eagles are expected to continue to lean on rookie LeSean McCoy, although a roster move remains a possibility. Philadelphia ranks 23rd in the NFL in rushing offense and last in the NFC East.
