A ‘Fly’ new play at the Huntington
The magic of live theater has never been more evident than in the Huntington’s production of “Stick Fly.” In lesser hands, playwright Lydia Diamond’s tale of familial dysfunction could easily be pedestrian, but director Kenny Leon finds everything that’s good about it and encourages his talented cast to run with it.

Son to stand trial for brutal murder

Shooting has BPD on alert
One man suffered non-life-threatening injuries in what police have called a gang-related shooting at the John Marshall School on Westville Street Tuesday night. In response, police have increased presence in the area, will deploy additional school police and streetworkers are targeting those known to be involved in violent activity.

Recent rise
Violent crime is down citywide this year, but a series of recent incidents have police on alert.

  • A 39-year-old man was killed last Thursday in a shooting on Clifford Street in Roxbury.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot to death on Bowdoin Street on Monday.
  • One person was stabbed in the head on Warren Street and two others stabbed on Woodrow Avenue in a separate incident. Both took place Tuesday afternoon.

Three years after he allegedly hacked apart his father and dumped his head in a backyard miles away, a Mattapan man is preparing to represent himself against gruesome murder charges.

Jury selection has begun in the trial of Brian Lee, 44, who has made the unusual choice to defend himself in a Suffolk Superior Court.

Prosecutors have alleged that Lee had a rocky relationship with his father, 70-year-old Edward Lee, who had taken out multiple restraining orders against his son.

On Oct. 28, 2006, Brian Lee allegedly ended that relationship by beating his father to death inside the victim’s Hollingsworth Street home. Brian Lee then decapitated and dismembered his father and then put some of the body parts — including the head — in a trash bag found later in a Roxbury backyard, prosecutors said.

Authorities said that Edward Lee’s torso was discovered in his home.

At the time of his arrest Brian Lee said he found his father’s lifeless body in the home, but instead of calling police cut up the victim to disperse the parts.

Brian Lee has already fired three defense attorneys. Denise Regan, his most recent attorney, will serve as standby counsel for the defendant.
