Hit the powder for just pennies

Other savings

1 Avoid the peak periods. They are often double what they would be for the rest of the season.

2 All-inclusive packages. Most resorts provide all-inclusives that offer airfare, lodging, lift tickets and lessons.

3 Negotiate. This year, property managers are willing to negotiate and make a “deal” on units.

4 Purchase lift tickets from a local ski and snowboard retailer for greater discounts. Walk-ins are welcome at most rental shops, but if you make your reservation ahead of time, you can often receive a discount.

Airline deal
Southwest Airlines Vacations’ “Friends Fly, Stay, and Ski Free” deal includes one day of free lodging and skiing, and a free flight for a friend at select ski areas in Colorado, Nevada and Utah for travel until Feb. 10. The catch? You have to book before Nov. 26.

We know — you’ve barely planned your Thanksgiving, let alone started to think about going on a ski vacation. But if you want a great, money-saving ski getaway this winter, it’s imperative you book now,  as deals will start to dry up by next week. Because slopes in the Western mountains saw many East Coast skiers stay close to home last year due to the recession, they’re launching the big sale guns to entice people to return. But that doesn’t mean their East Coast competition isn’t firing back with deals of their own. Here, we’ve got the deals and some advice on saving so you can hit the powder for just pennies.

Wyoming
Jackson Hole is one of the world’s best ski destinations. And this year, there is no excuse not to go. The early-season sale at Jackson Hole’s Hotel and Teton Mountain Lodge gives out a free lift ticket for each night of your stay (which is only $99 per person, per night, 800-631-6271, www.tetonlodge.com).  And at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, if you book a minimum of five nights’ lodging, and a minimum three-day lift ticket by Jan. 1, your fourth guest will fly for free (888-838-6660, jacksonhole.com).

Vermont
Killington’s “Ski and Stay” package offers a two-night, two-day deal that includes lodging and lift tickets, starting at just $113 per person per night, midwinter (midweek, non-holiday) and $87 per person, per night in the early and late season (killington.com/winter/plan/packages).  The all-inclusive midweek “Easy Package” in Stratton, Vt. offers lodging, lift tickets, lunch and rentals and starts at just $89 per adult, per day at the Inn at Stratton Mountain (www.stratton.com).

New Hampshire
Starting Nov. 27, the Omni Mount Washington and Bretton Arms Inn’s “Stay Here, Ski Free” package provides one day of skiing per each night of stay, with rates beginning at $89 per person, per night (OmniMountWashingtonResort.com). And Mount Washington Valley itself is offering midweek ski-and-stay deals (mtwashingtonvalley.org)  for the entire ski season.
