‘Free’ ad leads to fraud suit

Free means free.

Free means free.

NEW YORK. A Wisconsin college student is suing credit firm Experian — the brains behind the ubiquitous FreeCreditReport.com jingles — for fraudulent advertising after she inadvertently signed up for a monthly $14.95 monitoring service.

Erica Possin is lead plantiff in a class action suit against the credit powerhouse. The legal complaint points out that Experian has been repeatedly censured by the Federal Trade Commission, with no results. “The fact that the government got involved a few years ago shows that this is consumer fraud,” says John Balestriere, lead attorney on the case.
