Legacy on the line
The critics just can’t make up their minds about Peyton Manning. Three years ago, he couldn’t win the big one. But now, even before last night’s Super Bowl, he was being touted as perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time.
While the talking heads analyze and dissect his legacy, Manning just plays football. His numbers can speak for themselves, the rest he can’t control.
“I don’t live that way. I don’t play that way,” Manning said earlier this week. “I can never say how much I’ve accomplished. At some point when I retire, I’ll reflect back, but it’s still year to year to me.”
Manning holds at least 31 NFL records, from the random (most TD passes in Thursday games with 23) to the amazing (115 regular-season wins in the past decade). Yet whenever someone mentions his Hall of Fame credentials, he’s quick to put the focus on his teammates.
“Your question had a lot of ‘I’s’ phrased in it. I really think of it as a ‘we,’” Manning said when asked if winning a second Bowl would silence his critics. “I feel fortunate to have a number of guys on my team that you would love to go into any type of battle or game with.”

Joe Montana, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000, led the 49ers and Chiefs to a 117-47 cumulative record in 15 seasons (13 in San Francisco). He won four Super Bowls. Peyton Manning’s Colts are 117-59 in the regular season in his 12 years.
