CO scare ends well

CENTER CITY. All 550 students of the Art Institute who were left temporarily homeless last week following a carbon monoxide leak in their Chestnut Street dormitory were back in their apartments yesterday.

The apartment building at 1346 Chestnut St., which is leased to the school by a New York City real estate company, was actually reopened over the weekend, a school spokeswoman said, but students were allowed to stay in their Center City hotel rooms until yesterday morning.

Now each floor of the 17-story building is equipped with a carbon monoxide detector after the Art Institute requested that the building owner Ashkanazy Acquisition install them to prevent any future issues. The detectors aren’t mandatory, according to city rules.
