Beanpot on its way back to the Heights
The outdoor game at Fenway Park last month went to Boston University.
But the Beanpot is headed back to the Heights.
Boston College held off a furious late charge last night to beat BU, 4-3, in the men’s Beanpot final at the Garden.
The Terriers have traditionally dominated the first two Mondays in February; they’ve won the four-team “BU Invitational” a record 29 times.
But — after Kevin Shattenkirk’s early goal for BU — last night belonged to the Eagles, who took their 15th ’Pot.
Shattenkirk opened the scoring with an unassisted goal off a sloppy BC turnover deep in the Eagles’ end.
The Terriers carried the lead into the second period, but Steven Whitney knotted things soon after the opening whistle.
A Carl Sneep one-timer put BC ahead to stay, and Chris Kreider made it 3-1 with a pretty score late in the frame.
Barry Almeida beat BU goalie Kieran Millan unassisted early in the third.
BU defenseman David Warsofsky cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third period, and Colby Cohen’s power-play goal made it a one-goal game.
The Garden crowd leaned toward BC, with the school’s “Superfans” filling multiple sections.
