The world’s most dangerous surf site, Teahupo’o, is located above a reef off the coast of Tahiti, but 3-D glasses and an IMAX screen bring its waves to Boston.
“Ultimate Wave Tahiti,” now showing at the New England Aquarium, follows nine-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater and surf guide Raimana Van Bastolaer, the unofficial mayor of Teahupo’o, as they brave the wave, experience Tahitian culture, and share some lessons in oceanography.
“Surfing is one-third of the movie,” Van Bastolaer says. “It’s educational, too, that’s the second third, and it’s about Tahiti itself, the forming of an island and the protecting of a reef.”
The giant screen shows all of the movie’s components in vivid detail, from the grains of sand on the beach to the beads of water dripping off a surfboard, and the 3-D imagery lets viewers put themselves right in the barrel of Teahupo’o without having to worry about surviving (or even getting wet).
Van Bastolaer says he hopes that, most of all, the movie’s lifelike action and panoramas will inspire others to visit the island he loves so much.
“Maybe after watching this movie, they’re finally going to be like, ‘Yes! Let’s go to Tahiti!’” he says.
