It was kind of a no-brainer.” Of course Rudd, who’s built an impressive resume of smart comedies, was just as enamored of the man behind the camera. Since last April, Worth and fellow organizers at the Videogame Growth Initiative—a grassroots effort to better the local gaming industry—has been putting that message in front of city officials. "We always say that [the Videogame Growth Initiative] is a bunch of stubborn old men who don't want to leave the city," he says. "Let's build the industry here."
PHILADELPHIA. Philadelphia's annual brain drain gives video game developer Mike Worth a headache.
Worth, of Narberth, has been frustrated that local gaming graduates always take off for cities with stronger industries.
"We lose 40 game graduates every year who make an average of $60,000 to $70,000 per year," he said of the city's inability to keep young techies, mostly because of taxes on businesses and wages much higher than other cities.
Even in Worth's case, who started Bryn Mawr-based Space Whale Studios, a game development company, the city's business tax structure has prevented him from setting up shop downtown.
But Mayor Michael Nutter is trying to increase the city's "nerd" appeal. He announced new policies that would encourage new technology firms to start up operations in the city by removing certain taxes, for example, on their sales outside the city. Most firms sell to a wide audience across the entire country.
While techies already working in and around the city — mostly around, considering the tax burden is considerably less in the suburbs — are optimistic about making Philadelphia the "next hot spot" for gaming, local economic observers are not so sure it'll happen overnight.
"There is still a long way to go and our system has to get more competitive," Econsult vice president Stephen Mullin said yesterday of the city's tax structure, which includes hefty business privilege and wage taxes.
