1. How improved is the revamped defense?
The Giants have shown a renewed purpose in shoring up a defense that allowed the third most points in the league in 2009 — only bottom-feeders St. Louis and Detroit were worse.
They drafted heavily on defense, including first-round defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul out of South Florida, defensive tackle Linval Joseph and middle linebacker Phillip Dillard. Besides the rooks, New York also added free agent linebacker Keith Bulluck and safeties Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant to the mix, hoping the infusion fixes a unit that allowed a franchise-high 427 points.
2. Can Bulluck replace Antonio Pierce?
Signing the 11-year vet was a savvy if not desperate move by the Giants. The former Tennessee Titan is fighting his way back from tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament late last season but said his knee is already “90 percent” recovered.
The 33-year-old led the Titans in tackles (114 in 14 games) before the injury last season and will shift from weakside to middle linebacker with Big Blue. The Giants took a one-year, $2.5 million flier on Bulluck, who grew up a half hour from the Meadowlands, rather than hand over the spot to Jonathan Goff or Dillard.
3. Can Fewell bring the fire?
Perry Fewell enters as the new defensive coordinator after spending last season in Buffalo turning a ragged defensive unit into a serviceable one.
Fewell was an assistant coach/coordinator under head coach Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, so there’s familiarity to his scheme. The first priority is motivating a talented, yet underachieving bunch and building bonds with veteran stars like Osi Umenyiora.
