1. Will the Jets regret cutting Faneca?
Last year, Thomas Jones finished third in the NFL with 1,402 rushing yards behind the strength of one of the league’s top five offensive lines. This year, Shonn Greene will run behind rookie Vladimir Ducasse, who replaces veteran Alan Faneca at left guard.
There’s no doubt Ducasse is raw, but the UMass product will prove to be an upgrade over Faneca when it comes to mobility and athleticism.
2. Will Jenkins return to form up front?
The Jets boasted the league’s best defense last season and half of it was spent without Kris Jenkins, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament.
Jenkins then got into trouble during rehab, ballooning close to 400 pounds. After implementing a strict cookie diet — yes, cookies — the big man is still a space eater at around 360 pounds, but the lighter, trimmer version should intimidate both backs and quarterbacks in 2010. If his motor continues to run as fast as his mouth, Rex Ryan will be quite pleased.
3. Can this team keep its focus?
HBO is filming the Jets for their show “Hard Knocks.” Darrelle Revis still wants a new contract. And Ryan’s already bloated ego is sure to get even more swollen as the season nears.
The distractions are all there. While most of it may be of their own doing, it’ll fall onto Mark Sanchez to lead this team back to the playoffs. The second-year quarterback must show poise from the get-go when the team reports to Cortland on Sunday. kristian dyer
