Why is there a giant (and by giant, we do mean gigantic) glass shoe in Taiwan?

We bet you would have never guessed that the giant glass shoe, isn’t a shoe store, a moseluem of broken heels or a department store — it’s a church.

Sponsored by the local government, the towering pump won’t be used for regular church worship but for wedding photo shoots and ceremonies, the BBC reports.

“In our planning, we want to make it a blissful, romantic avenue… Every girl imagines how they will look like when they become the bride,” Pan Tsuei-ping, a local government employee, told the BBC.

The BBC also reports that the gigantic shoe was built as a memorial of sorts for a local legend.

“According to officials in the 1960s, a 24-year-old girl surnamed Wang from the impoverished region suffered from Blackfoot disease. Both of her legs had to be amputated, leading to the cancellation of her wedding. She remained unmarried and spent the rest of her life at a church.”

Lovely.

The glass structure, which is made of 320 tinted glass panels, is 36 feet wide and looms at an impressive 55 feet tall (that’s a third of the Statue of Liberty), will reportedly open in February.
