$1-million Challenge winners announced

The winners of the $1-million MassChallenge startup competition were announced Thursday. Four companies each collected $100,000 while 12 others won $50,000 apiece. Nine expert judges identified the 16 winners.

“MassChallenge has brought hundreds of innovators to Boston’s waterfront,” Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. “The entrepreneurs who have competed are the job creators of the future.”

» Ksplice: Makes it possible to install security patches and other software updates without rebooting computer systems.
» Locately: Analyzes GPS data from mobile phones to better understand consumer interests and habits.
» OsmoPure: Creates low-cost water purification devices for disaster relief. Users fill plastic bottles with dirty water and screw on the purifier and squeezes the bottle to dispense clean water.
» Samanta Shoes: Helps women find stylish and comfortable shoes, including in sizes as large as 14.
