Joseph Knowles lined up at 11 a.m. on Stephen Avenue to make sure he got his free white cowboy hat in the Get Your Head in a Hat this year.
“I’ve never had one for Stampede,” said Knowles who has lived in Calgary for 33 years. “It’s very exciting.”
The Get Your Head in a Hat campaign gave away 10,000 hats in the event’s fifth year said Vyetta Sunderland, from the Stampede promotion committee.
“It’s a great to have all of these folks who are excited about it, know of the promotion and want to get their head in a hat,” said Sunderland.
Sunderland said that those who are wearing a cowboy hat during Stampede could be rewarded with more than 100,000 prizes worth $3.2 million.
Volunteers will be throughout the city handing out gift certificates and WestJet flights said Sunderland.
“We encourage everyone to be wearing their hats during Stampede week to promote our Western heritage and spirit.” said Sunderland.
