On Jan. 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, bringing to an end the life of a man who dedicated himself to freeing India from British rule by promoting methods of peaceful, nonviolent protest. Today, Gandhi continues to stand as a force for political change and as a spiritual pillar.
