17 arrests made in drug bust

Calgary police continue to make a dent in the city’s downtown drug trade after Operation Iris netted 17 arrests, police announced Thursday.

The operation focused mainly in the downtown core, Insp. Kevan Stuart said, but officials were led to various areas of the city including Bridgeland and Motel Village.

“I think it’s making a difference but it’s not something we can just walk away from. We have to keep on it,” Stuart said of the drug operations.

“Ultimately, this is organized crime. Drugs are an organized crime and this is the street level end of it.”

While police laid charges against 17 people, 17 more suspects remain at large, and Stuart says police continue to search for them.

Eight of the suspects arrested were involved and charged in previous drug stings.
