20K tickets issued for cellphone use

It seems police weren’t kidding when they said they’d be cracking down on distracted drivers this year, according to numbers released by ICBC.

More than 21,000 tickets were handed out for driving infractions between Feb. 1 and Aug. 1. Of those, 95 per cent were to people texting or talking behind the wheel.

Legislation was introduced in January to ban the use of hand-held devices while driving.

Solicitor General Mike de Jong said the number of offences reflect the need to change dangerous driving behaviour.
