A trio of “gun enthusiasts,” according to authorities, were arrested Tuesday morning as they attempted to drive through the Holland Tunnel with loaded guns, magazines, ammo, knives and body armor.

The three suspects — two men in their 50s and a woman in her 20s — were stopped around 8 a.m. by police on the New Jersey side of the tunnel, according to PIX11 New York.

Police stopped the car because it had a cracked windshield, PIX11 reported.

According to NBC4 New York, the car the suspects were in was a brightly colored Dodge utility vehicle with decals around the vehicle for Tonka, Monster energy drink, and one for Higher Ground Tactical — gun range and shop in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

Police found multiple weapons — including assault rifles and handguns, some of which were loaded — knives, a camouflage helmet and ballistic vests, NBC4 reported.

Under the New York Safe Act, signed into law in 2013, “high-capacity magazines” that hold more than 10 rounds are illegal, as are semiautomatic assault-style rifles.

In New Jersey, assault-style rifles are illegal, as are magazines holding more than 15 rounds. State law also prohibits loaded weapons in vehicles and requires all guns to be transported unloaded in a locked container.

Law enforcement officials told NBC4 that the suspects — who may be from Pennsylvania — are “so called gun enthusiasts” and are not suspected of having ties to terrorists or planning an attack.

Authorities also found drugs inside the vehicle, NBC4 reported, and one of the suspects allegedly told police that they were on their way to Queens to help “save a friend who is on heroin and being held against her will.”

The investigation is still ongoing.
